Just Got an Air Fryer? Make These First
Every January, a million air fryers come out of gift boxes and meet a million people wondering what to cook first. The answer is a sequence — five cooks that teach the machine's personality while producing zero failures.
Day one: frozen fries
The calibration meal. 400°F, 12–15 minutes, shake at the midpoint. You learn the basket, the shake reflex and your unit's true temperament (they all run slightly different) on a dish that cannot disappoint. Graduate immediately to loaded fries once the base is mastered — day one can still end gloriously.
The confidence ladder
Cook two: breaded anything. Chicken fries from frozen — the air fryer's genre-defining act, crispier than the oven in half the time. Three: bacon, 350°F, ten minutes, no stovetop splatter, drippings neatly in the drawer. Four: a real dinner — the crispy chicken burger bowl proves the machine cooks meals, not just sides. Five: the vegetable surprise — plantains, brussels, broccoli; the plantain salad converts vegetable skeptics on contact.
Day-one mistakes to skip
Run it empty 10 minutes first (factory-coating smell burns off). Never spray aerosol cooking spray on nonstick baskets — it gums the coating; use an oil mister or toss food in oil. And do not crowd: the single-layer law from the conversion chart is the difference between crispy and steamed. After these five cooks, the machine stops being a gadget and starts being where dinner happens.
