How to Fix runny mashed potatoes (Rescue in Minutes)
Dinner is on the line and something went sideways. Deep breath — this is fixable, usually in under five minutes.
The rescue, in order
- Low heat in the pot, stirring — 3–5 minutes evaporates the surplus.
- Faster: whisk in instant potato flakes a tablespoon at a time (the pro kitchen secret).
- Or lean in: thin further with warm milk and call it potato purée, restaurant-style.
Why this works
Excess liquid either leaves as steam or gets absorbed by added starch — flakes are pre-cooked potato, so they vanish seamlessly.
So it never happens again
Runny mash usually starts with waterlogged potatoes: steam-dry them in the hot pot 2 minutes before mashing next time.
